For cases where it is desired to measure the level of water in a boiler or steam generator application, a bi-color level gauge is often utilized. The device consists of a set of light emitters such as LEDs, and optical filters, one red and one green, that send light into the level gauge chamber through the water/steam towards the level gauge glass and the observer.

The optical principle at work is that different colors of light (which represent specific frequencies and wavelengths) have a different index of refraction when they pass through different media. When the level gauge chamber contains steam, the green rays of light deviate significantly and as a result, the observer sees red light on the level gauge glass. Similarly, when the level gauge contains water, the red light is deviated from reaching the observer while the green light passes through. Hence the level of water in the boiler can be established as a result of this color change observed from the variation in index of refraction. Green represents liquid water and red represents vapor or steam.

Bi-color level gauges may consist of a long glass or a series of portholes of exposed glass.

Gauge Glass

Plain glass tube level gauges, also known as sight glass or gauge glass, are tubular glass gauges that are not encased in metal plates. These tubular gauges come in a clear color or with a red line, which improves the visibility of clear liquids. Tubular gauges come in many different diameters and lengths, which are often custom cut to the client’s specifications. Finishes on the ends of tubular glass gauges are seen cut, ground, or polished depending on client specifications. Tubular Glass Gauges are often used in low-pressure applications up to 600 psi.

Transparent Level Gauges

Transparent gauges contain the liquid medium between two pieces of glass on opposing sides of the chamber. Light shines through one side of the gauge, and the level is viewed from the other side. The fluid level is indicated as the result of the different transparency of the two media. Transparent Level Gauges can be purchased with tubular glass or flat glass. While tubular glass is more cost-effective, flat glass designs can better withstand applications with high pressures.

Transparent gauges are a good choice in applications where the actual liquid characteristics need to be seen, as well as with liquid to liquid interfaces and applications with repetitive thermal shock. They can also be used when corrosive liquids are present with the addition of mica shields. Mica shields are used when acidic solutions or hot alkaline are present to protect the integrity of the glass.

Reflex Level Gauges

Reflex glass level gauges work off light refraction and reflection. The glass has several grooves for reflecting prisms. The liquid level is easily identified with different brightness levels of the glass in the liquid and no illumination is required to view the liquid level.

Reflex Level Gauges allow for a better view of clear liquids because they are equipped with special optics that make the liquid visible. Reflex level indicators are often used in high-temperature applications, specifically for boiling liquids. Boiling liquids levels can be hard to read with other types of level gauges since their bubbles make the surface level questionable. The manual adjustment of the isolation valve as the process fluid enters the chamber reduces the bubbling. Reflex Level Gauges are also suitable in applications with high pressures and corrosive process fluids. Reflex level gauges are not suitable for when the interface between two liquids needs to be read.

Magnetic Level Gauges

A magnetic level gauge, or magnetic level indicators measure fluid levels by utilizing a float that rises and falls with the fluid level. The moving of the magnet assembly adjusts a series of bi-color magnetic flags that provide a visual indication of the liquid level. The mechanics of these level indicators are simple are require no power source yet are very effective and reliable at recording liquid levels. They are also virtually maintenance-free, and the magnetic force can affect optional switches or transmitters mounted outside of the chamber.

Magnetic level gauges are used as security against leakages when process fluids are chemically aggressive, poisonous, inflammable or explosive. Magnetic level indicators can be used in a wide variety of applications and are considered alternative to glass gauges.

Construction and Working of Level Gauge Technique

A sight glass instrument consists of a graduated tube of toughened glass which is connected to the interior of the tank at the bottom whose water level gauge is to be measured.

The image below shows a simple sight glass for an open tank in which the liquid level gauge in the sight glass matches the level of liquid in the tank. As the level of liquid in the tank rises and falls, the level gauge in the sight glass also rises and falls accordingly. Thus by measuring the level gauge in the sight glass, the level of liquid in the tank is measured. When it is desired to measure a liquid level with the liquid under pressure or vacuum, the sight glass must be connected to the tank at the top as well as at the bottom, otherwise the pressure difference between the tank and the sight glass would cause false reading.

In this case, the glass tube is enclosed in protective housing, and the two valves are provided for isolating the level gauge from the tank in case of breakage of the sight glass. The smaller valve at the bottom is provided for blowing out the level gauge for cleaning purpose.

How Doed The Fuel Tank Gauge Work?

The inconvenience of being stranded on a road/street/highway when the tank runs dry is only surpassed by the embarrassment that comes with it. In any case, there is no excuse for running out of fuel in a small city like Singapore, because there’s always a petrol/diesel station within a 15-minute drive, and it’s open all day and night.

On the face of it, the fuel tank gauge is a simple device. As a rule of thumb, it doesn’t even indicate/calculate the quantity of fuel in litres (or gallons), since all that is needed to alert the driver is the amount of fuel relative to the tank’s capacity.

In this regard, fuel tank gauges have just two main markings – F for Full and E for Empty. Some have a “½” marking, too, to show half-tank. The exact quantum in litres is a piece of information that is not critical to the driving, and the info is probably meaningless to the driver anyway, even someone obsessed with his car’s FC (fuel consumption).

The basic mechanical fuel tank gauge consists of very few parts, and its operation relies on the same simple principle as a voltmeter (voltage-measuring analogue meter).

Essentially, the fuel tank gauge just needs to measure voltage across a variable resistor. But said resistor must somehow vary in direct proportion to the amount of fuel in the tank. To do this, within the fuel tank is a float at one end of a lever arm-and-slider running over a strip of resistor at the other end. Known as the Sending Unit, it is a vital part of every vehicular fuel tank and works flawlessly.

As the float moves vertically with the changing fuel level, the opposite end of the lever slides across the resistor, causing a change in voltage supply at the tank gauge. Finally, in direct response, the indicating needle moves to the appropriate position on the tank gauge.

Because of their simplicity and reliability, the fuel measurement and its display have remained pretty much unchanged over the decades. However, like almost everything in the modern motorcar, some electronic devices have been included, not as a replacement for the proven classical arrangement but to complement it.

Incidentally, the fuel tank gauge does not provide any input to the car’s on-board computer, except in some cases to reset the average fuel consumption after the tank has been refuelled.

Where electronics are used, the Sending Unit feeds into a tiny electronic circuit to trigger a “Fuel Low” or “Please Refuel” warning light at a preset level, usually accompanied by a fuel dispenser symbol. It provides a clear visual notification that the vehicle can travel only 30km to 60km more with the remaining fuel. In fact, most fuel tank gauges are notoriously pessimistic, so as to provide plenty of “allowance” for the optimistic driver running on empty.

In certain cars, digital tank gauges with LCD or LED readouts have replaced the mechanical instrument and its analogue needle. The function of such tank gauges is the same, and the good old float arrangement continues to serve as the measuring device. Only the display method is different.

An electronic processor receives the signal from the Sending Unit, converts it into digital signals and updates an electronic module that controls the display. Some of the systems employ a bar graph, while the more recent ones reproduce a graphic image of the analogue fuel tank gauge.

Note that whatever the display, none indicates numerical values in litres or gallons – just the all-important E and F.
